A screening camp in Jehanabad found something that needed a closer look. The investigation that followed found nothing serious.
I had been waiting to find out for a long time, and the waiting was the worst part of it.
Nasreen came to a screening camp in her block in Jehanabad because a neighbour was going and there was no charge for the consultation. She had noticed a lump some months earlier and had not mentioned it to anyone.
The clinician at the camp examined her and said it needed a proper investigation rather than an opinion under a tent. She was referred into the hospital, and the trust's subsidised investigations covered the imaging, which was the part she had been quietly dreading paying for.
The report found nothing that required treatment. She was told what to watch for and asked to come back if anything changed.
Screening does not always find disease. Most of the time it does not. What it does is settle a question that a person would otherwise carry for years, and it makes the next visit easier to make.
